Brickwork Is Underway On The Lake Social Club In River North

The social club known as The Lake at 205 West Superior Street in River North has topped out at five stories, and brickwork has begun adorning the upper levels. Particularly noticeable is the masonry just above the cornice, featuring alternating brick and limestone sections. While the outrigger platform hides progress on the fourth floor, third-story masonry is visible just below it.

On May 6, two permits came through for a pair of dumbwaiters. Last time we checked on progress here, the city had just issued a revision permit for modifications throughout the club. Now, another alteration pends in the Chicago Data Portal for the fourth floor. It reads:

“DDS revision to permit 101063522 for renovations on the 4th floor. Work to include program and layout updates that include an additional guestroom, relocation of storage, and conversion of an office into storage with associated MEPFP updates”

The Lake features the team of Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York City as the design architect and GREC Architects of Chicago as the architect of record. Bulley & Andrews is the general contractor. According to a Crain’s Chicago Business report from April, developer Topography Hospitality plans to open the club in the fall. It will feature multiple restaurants and cocktail lounges, an outdoor terrace on the top floor, overnight guest rooms, spa facilities, and more.

Anyone else find it odd that they built one structure but are facing it to look like two that got attached? Were they bound to some kind of facade based on what they tore down?

    • I find it odd they tore down two well preserved classic Chicago vintage buildings to replacement them with one faux neo-classical building that appears to be the same size, configuration and height.

  2. Awesome. Cool design!
