Aberdeen Crossing Nears Exterior Completion In West Town

Exterior work on the residential floors of Aberdeen Crossing appears to be complete, leaving just ground-level finishes remaining. Wildwood Investments and Contemporary Concepts are bringing a seven-story, 99-unit apartment building online at 1100 West Grand Avenue in West Town, and after receiving a caisson permit in August 2024 and breaking ground two months later, the finish line appears to be in sight.

The bKL Architecture-designed project will have all of its dwelling units on the six upper floors, with a 28-space parking garage, 99 bicycle spaces, and about 1,700 square feet of retail space occupying the first floor. The goal was to have apartments ready for inhabitants in the first quarter of this year, and that target date seems to still apply.

The unit mix will include 10 studio apartments and 20 convertible units, plus 22 one-bedroom, 36 two-bedroom, and 11 three-bedroom floor plans. Residents will have access to a small rooftop deck on the second floor and larger amenity space and deck on the seventh floor. The project is under development as of right, so there will be no units set aside as affordable. There do not appear to be listings online for apartments yet, but the first-floor commercial space has a listing of its own and is slated to be available in April.

Aberdeen crossing is a half mile west of the Grand Blue Line subway station at the Grand/Halsted/Milwaukee intersection. The Route 65 bus, which will make stops right outside tenants’ doors, can be used as a connection to save on walking. The #8 Halsted and #56 Milwaukee buses also make stops at street level above the Blue Line station. Bear in mind, the Halsted bus is currently rerouted while the Halsted Street viaduct next to ongoing casino construction is rebuilt, and the apartment building will be open before that work is completed.

  1. Unfortunately, it’s just not an attractive building. The massing and brick work are just not quality.

  2. Love the new housing. Building is quite ugly though. Reminds me of a suburban office park building from the 1980s

  3. This is one of the ugliest buildings to go up in a while an in such a prominent location, absolute disappointing garbage.

Can’t decide if I hate it or not

  5. I like the angles of the building, not so much the desert color motif.

  6. Maybe it will grow on me, but it looks like a school.

  7. 99 units to 28 parking spaces is a decently low ratio. And I like that they have the 99-space bike parking.

As others have said, it is not a good-looking building. The vibe is like 1950s schoolhouse mixed with generic 1980s office park. It somehow managed to take the most depressing elements of both and combine them.

Oh well, it’s a good density upgrade for the neighborhood

  8. Love the flags. Go Bears!

  9. I wish the City would turn the open space to the east into a public amenity, rather than just fencing it off. IDOT probably owns it, but it wouldn’t be hard to move the fence closer to the interchange.

  10. I’m glad this was built, but it’s certainly help solidify my belief that white and beige brick almost always looks pretty bad.
