Two permits have been issued by the City of Chicago to build a four-story addition and to renovate portions of the existing Prescott Elementary School at 1632 West Wrightwood Avenue in Lincoln Park. The permit applications were filed by CPS on January 16, and came through on May 7 with a reported construction cost of $2.622 million.

The addition will be built on the east side of the school toward Ashland Avenue. That will require removal of the existing fire escape while providing a new stairway and elevator addition. Eight parking spaces will be added, including two oversized spaces for vans, while the original building will have work done on restrooms, maintenance closets, and the reception area. Catch basins, sewer work, and other infrastructure improvements will be made for the footprint of the 62-foot tall addition.
Michael Salud of Stephen Rankin Associates is named as the architect of record for the addition, while The George Sollitt Construction Company will be the general contractor. The school, completed in 1899, is named after William Hickling Prescott an American historian known for his works on Spanish history. Information on the original architect is not readily available.

Dozens of renovation permits have been issued for CPS schools since late April, as the school year winds down and work can begin while classes are out of session.
