New docks are afloat and pile work continues for the new marina at Navy Pier. A new dock stretches from the west end of the pier out toward the open waters of Lake Michigan, with shorter piers, all of which have now been installed, jutting out at angles toward the water filtration plant across the body of water.

On April 7, a boater amenities building was permitted for installation at 797 East Grand Avenue. The two-story container structure is being built off site, and will be delivered to the marina in early May. It was designed by Town Studios of Northbrook, and the permit names S.I. Container Builds as the general contractor for its assembly.

J.F. Brennan Company of La Crosse, Wisc is the general contractor for the marina. Navy Pier will be ready to welcome the first transient boaters to the marina on June 15. The development is led by NPM (Navy Pier Marina) Venture LLC, an entity founded by Chicago native Randy Podolsky.

Normally, I hate the whole “let’s use a shipping container” thing, but at least it makes sense here.

  3. I love that they’re doing this, however I also think that if they could, they should also make the north side of Navy Pier a bit more lively and enjoyable to walk along side of. Everything seems to be on the other side and while I know there is a road to get to the parking garage, I still think there are so many ways to improve this side of it.
