Demolition of the former Chicago Tribune Freedom Center has begun, in earnest, along the Chicago River in West Town. With Bally’s Casino expected to open in 2026, there’s no time to waste, and Brandenburg Industrial Service has begun tearing into the old printing plant after receiving four demolition permits late last month to begin demo work. There is a lot of equipment on site, with piles of scrap and rubble already waiting to be sorted and hauled away.
Work is being done on the west side of the facility facing Halsted Street, working from the south end and proceeding north toward Chicago Avenue. We’ll continue to share demolition progress with you in the coming weeks.

bless the people tagging the building before it goes down
There is something poetic about tearing down the freedom center just to build a casino. Very apropos for our time; out with news and in with entertainment. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead.
I worked here in the early 80s right after it was built. It was one of the modern printing plants at the time. What a shame, to make room for a casino?? Really
Obviously the building was not being used anymore -newspapers are no longer being printed as they once were-wo the building was going to be torn down no matter what. Folks its only brick.
