Topped-Out 920 N Wells Takes the 25th Spot in Construction Countdown

Ranking 25th in the year-end countdown of tallest Chicago construction projects, 920 N Wells Street is continuing facade installation in Near North Side. The 21-story tower developed by JDL is the first step in a larger $1.3 billion development known as North Union.

The mixed-use building will have stores on the ground floor and 238 apartments, of which 16 residences will be affordable. The floor plan distribution will include 42 studios, 134 one-bedrooms, 54 two-bedrooms, and eight three-bedrooms. The podium will have 8,000 square feet of retail space and a garage that can fit 207 bikes and 105 vehicles. On the roof, there will be a deck with a penthouse enclosure attached.

North Union is a joint venture between JDL, Square Mile Capital, and Intercontinental Real Estate. When completed, it will include 2,656 residences, 30,000 square feet of commercial space designated for retail and offices, and 2.5 acres of public areas. The tallest towers in the later stages are planned to stand up to 700 feet high.

The 217-foot-tall tower was designed by Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. The angular volume is wrapped in a glass and metal curtain wall and interchanging overhanging segments on its north and south sides.

There are several transit options nearby, including Divvy bike and scooter stations, and CTA bus service for Routes 22, 37, 66, 70 and 156. The closest L station serviced by Brown and Purple Lines is accessible via a five-minute walk south to Chicago station.

Power Construction is the general contractor for this project. The tower is scheduled to be completed by next year, with the broader North Union development projected to finish by 2026.
