At the southwest corner of Streeterville, facade scaffolding can be seen directly north of Tribune Tower at 160 E Illinois Street. Originally built in 2007 at 27 stories, the building known as “Avenue East” contains a total of 130 condominium units. The edifice, originally designed by OWP/P and Built Form Architecture, provides a postmodern aesthetic with a mix of metal paneling, concrete, and glass.
The owner, Avenue East Condominium Association, has planned the removal and replacement of the existing metal panel cladding and the attached insulation. According to a permit issued this past August, the architect of record has been listed as Lurita Blank of Raths, Raths & Johnson, Inc.
The building resides close to various bus transit options, such as Routes 2, 3, 26, 29, 65, 66, 120, 121, 124, 125, 143, 146, 147, 148, 151, 157, 850, 851, and 855 all within a two-minute walk. Closest CTA L trains can be found for the Red Line at Grand station, a seven-minute walk west.
Tuschall Engineering Co Inc is serving as the general contractor, with a reported construction price tag of $3.9 million. While the building is still open to residents, it is currently unclear when all of the facade replacement is expected to complete.
