Construction permits have been issued for a two-story church located at 3133 W Carroll Avenue in East Garfield Park. Filed under owner Burl Rose, the property had an ordinance passed in 2018 allowing for the previous zoning designation of M1-2 Limited Manufacturing Business Park District to convert to C1-2 Neighborhood Commercial District. The site is currently a vacant lot and once housed a single-story masonry industrial building. The new church will be occupied by Hermon Baptist Church, which originally opened in 1887 and is considered to be the oldest African American church from the city’s North Side.

Shabbir Chandabhai of Burhani Design Architects is the design architect, while Van Tomaras of Design 21 Company is the listed architect of record. The church’s design is oriented around a concrete-clad tower that connects to a shorter segment with red brick cladding, green roofing, and a prominent concrete cornice that wraps around the top.

Nearest bus service includes Route 52 located at Kedzie & Carroll via a minute walk west. Additional stops for Route 82 are located a six-minute walk west to Homan & Carroll, while Route 94 can be found a six-minute walk southeast to Fulton & Sacramento. Those looking to board the CTA L Green Line will find the Kedzie station via six-minute walk south.

Various park spaces also lie within the area, including Jefferson (Nancy) Park via a four-minute walk southeast, and the northeast corner of Garfield Park is a 10-minute walk southwest.

GMP Development LLC is the general contractor for the $1.2 million construction, whose completion timeline is not currently known.
