The City of Chicago has issued an emergency demolition permit for a multi-unit greystone building at 3442 West Jackson Boulevard in East Garfield Park. The demo was necessitated by a September fire that gutted the building, damaging it beyond repair and leaving the remnants too dangerous to remain standing.

The fire broke out on the morning of September 5. The home, built in 1900, had just sold in June for $205,000, according to real estate website Redfin. A coach house at the rear of the property was demolished over a decade ago, while the main home appeared to be in declining condition, as seen in listing photos. The recent sale would indicate someone wanted to do a gut rebab on the building, but those plans were destroyed in the fire.

The permit lists McDonagh Demolition as the demo contractor. Due to the unsafe condition of the damaged structure, it is safe to assume the teardown will be done immediately, if it isn’t completed already. Often, fire-damaged buildings are demolished immediately for saftey reasons, and the permit comes through when it comes through.
