Evanston Environment Board Considering Parking Requirements Overhaul

Evanston Labs. Context aerial by ESG Architecture & Design

Evanston’s Environment Board has established a committee to study the transition from minimum to maximum parking requirements for new developments. This initiative responds to requests from council members and community organizations aiming to reduce parking to promote public transit, cycling, and walking. The findings will be incorporated into the Envision Evanston 2045 comprehensive plan.

Some board members support the shift to parking maximums, while others raise concerns about its impact on areas with limited transit in Evanston. Despite these reservations, the board will form a committee to further study the proposal.

  1. Wow, I’m floored by this. Evanston will become more urban than Chicago? Evanston will let go of car dependency before Chicago!? Hopefully we follow suit shortly thereafter.

  2. What isn’t mentioned here is that this is the result of an RTA LTA Grant (Regional Transportation Authority Local Technical Assistance Grant). Most Chicagoland municipalities don’t have the local staff capacity to do all of the planning work that should be done. The RTA and CMAP (Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, the local metropolitan planning organization (MPO – planning has a lot of jargon) provide a lot of assistance to our suburbs, but it really speaks to how under-resourced everyone is.
