A demolition permit was issued on Tuesday for the removal of a one-story masonry building located at 5000 N Clark Street in the Andersonville neighborhood. The site was formerly home to Start Auto Repair and Body Shop. McDonagh Demolition Inc is serving as the demolition contractor for this project. At the time of publication, no plans have been submitted for any future developments at the site.

The site is well positioned along the N Clark Street corridor and is readily accessible via public transportation. The closest bus option is for Route 22 which can be boarded at the intersection of Clark & Ainslie via a two-minute walk south. The CTA L Red  Line can be found at the Argyle station via an 11-minute walk east. There is an abundance of retail and dining options within a five-minute walk in any direction of the property site.

  1. While I’m not a fan of auto repair shops along city streets like this, it’s generally worse that the city allows demolitions before plans for a new building have been approved and funded. Empty spaces are black holes of city blocks and vibrant street life.

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this site currently an empty lot after the fire damage from April of last year? I’m pretty sure everything is torn down here already.

    • Yes, that structure is long gone already (from the fire).

There is a small repair shop immediately south of this lot that’s still there, but not sure of the exact address.
