Facade work is now in full swing for the University of Illinois’ Outpatient Surgery Center & Specialty Clinics, a six-story addition to UI Health‘s hospital campus in the Illinois Medical District.

The 200,000 square feet of programming will provide a total of eight operating rooms and eight procedure rooms, as well as clinical space for Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Transplant, Urology, and Pharmacy Services. The project will also take on an educational component, and will in-part be used for training doctors and nurses.

Shive Hattery and ZGF have co-designed the new structure, which will be enveloped in a mix of glass and textured cement paneling. Already, these vertical pieces can be seen populating the exterior, with variable widths and spacing between each. The building will also link to the main hospital building via a two-story skybridge that connects the second and third floors.

Alongside the current construction, a new welcome podium is being built across the adjacent Taylor & Wood intersection. This second component will include public seating, a registration and check-in area, a security station and office, meditation and Pastoral Care areas, and conference rooms.

Bound by S Wood Street, W Taylor Street, and S Hermitage Avenue, the site is centrally located to a variety of transit options. Route 157 can be accessed via a two-minute walk east to Taylor & Paulina, while other buses within a roughly five-minute walk include Routes 7, 9, X9, and 50. The CTA L Polk station is also in close proximity, available via five-minute walk northeast.

Pepper Construction and Brown & Momen Construction are serving as the general contractors, with a reported total cost of $194 million. As noted in an article by UI Health, 30 percent of these costs will be used with businesses by local minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and veterans. A full completion of both the larger medical building and the welcome podium is expected for next year.
